Charles Westover was born in December 1934. He grew up in Coopersville, Michigan, where he later became known as Del Shannon. As a little boy, his mother taught him how to play the Ukulele. He purchased his first acoustical guitar for $5. At age 14, he went to the Coopersville Train Station to pick up his first Sears and Robuck guitar that he had ordered. From there, he carried it everywhere. You could find him playing most any day at school, in the hallways, during noon hours, in class, at football games and anywhere else. He became known for his hit 'Runaway' in the 60s along with many other popular hits along the way.
The Coopersville Rotary Club continues to honor his memory with this unique linear Car Show, and Del Shannon Days events. Thursday, it starts with a Kids Fest, which includes many activities for our community, young and old. Games, Race Car Show, carnival rides and finishing out the night with a FREE outdoor movie event. On Friday evening a Car Cruise around the town is the popular attraction. It draws up to 400 cars for the cruise. On Saturday, anywhere from 500 or more cars line up along Coopersvilles' Downtown Main Street, and draws thousands of people from all over to participate or enjoy. On Friday evening and Saturday you can enjoy some cold beverages from the beverage tent, along with some great food from local and commercial food vendors. Saturday also brings in a fairly large Craft Show to town.
The Del Shannon Days/Car Show gives back to our Community. With the help of our sponsors we are able to donate our profits to NEOFORUM and the Del Shannon Scholarship Fund, along with several other non profit groups local and beyond. Over the last few years we have given over $50,000 to the NEOFORUM, and over $15,000 to the Del Shannon Scholarship Fund.
